Oral surgery in the service of orthodontics
Your orthodontist, in agreement with your referring dentist, can ask the indication of a surgical management in certain cases: the release of a tooth included to allow its placement on the arch; the installation of mini-screws anchor; the mobilization of a tooth; extractions of wisdom teeth, supernumerary teeth, or other teeth, as recommended by the orthodontist.
The exact position of the teeth included and/or supernumerary will be visualized on the 3D reconstructions of the maxilla using current digital techniques.
Some techniques, requiring surgical procedures can speed up your treatment: The implementation of anchoring miniscrews and/ or corticotomies and piezocision.
Corticotomies or piezocision is a surgical treatment, performed under local anesthesia, consisting of «softening» the bone around the teeth to facilitate their movement during orthodontic treatment.
Its purpose is to:
- accelerate orthodontic treatment in adults;
- move ankylosed teeth (teeth whose mobility is greatly reduced due to the disappearance of the ligament surrounding the root and therefore difficult to pull by conventional equipment);
- moving canines included in adults;
- to facilitate and enable orthodontics in patients with periodontal alterations (loss of bone support around the teeth).
